A great source for movie titles suitable for family viewing — family friendly movies — used to be companies that would specialize in editing DVDs to remove any profanity, violence, sex, or adult content and renting the edited movies to their subscribers.
Club members could rent the edited, family safe version of popular movies that might otherwise not be so family friendly.
Renting Edited DVDs nowadays is pretty much impossible except in some very small retail outlets in Idaho that are staying off the internet, and therefore off of the studios’ and directors’ radars — for now.
While in the past, quite a few companies would allow subscribers to rent edited movies from their sites, all of these companies have been forced to stop offering this service due to a court ruling which found that DVD edits violated the integrity of the original works.
Online clubs and companies that used to edit movies and rent them out include include Flicks Club, CleanFilms, CleanFlix, & Family Edited DVDs.
CleanFlicks
They offered edited DVDs for rental or purchase. A CleanFlicks edited DVD movie was a Hollywood movie title without the cursing, profanity, sexual content, graphic violence, nudity and adult situations. (as per the clean flicks site)
Family Flix
Family Flix removes extreme violence, profanity, nudity, and sexual situations from new or already owned movies. Members could send in previously owned DVDs for editing, or purchase direct from Family Flix.
CleanFilms
CleanFilms allowed users to buy or rent family edited movies. Family Edited movies consisted of movies that were edited for content to remove sexual scenes, offensive language, nudity and graphic violence.
It should be noted that CleanFlicks is still in business, however they now offer a library of pre-screened family films for rental. The idea is that original films are viewed and given the CleanFlicks seal of approval so to speak.
The inability of consumers to find edited movies for rent on the internet has moved many of them to “Family Movie Clubs” on the Internet.
Online family movie clubs include Family Pass, and of course Disney.
While even Hollywood can produce a good clean family related movie from time to time, the loss of rental clubs for edited movies is a loss for those looking to enjoy family related entertainment without the fear of a unwanted or uncomfortable content coming up with children in the room.
