An edited movie is one whose original content has been altered to change the final output.
Typical or classic examples include movies which show on television, and are altered for time and formatting and of course to remove any of the cursing, language, sex, nudity, or adult situations that would get them in trouble with the censorship boards and the FCC — the group that controls the content of material that is broadcast in the US.
Interestingly, airlines are also edit their movies. It started out that they would edit out any scene or reference to an airplane crash, but later they began editing movies to take out crude or lewd material, or basically anything that someone might find objectionable when shown to minors.
Edited movies have been under scrutiny in the US in the last five years, including a vicious legal battle which questioned the rights of certain companies that were editing hollywood feature length films on VHS and DVD and selling or renting the films to viewer and consumers in Utah and other conservative states.
The legal battle comes down to the rights of someone to distribute an edited movie….and those that were creating and selling or renting edited dvds were told to cease and decist and told that they were not authorized to distribute content that did not own the license to.
